JetGo Australia (Brisbane International) will launch services from Wollongong (also known as Illawarra Regional Airport) to Brisbane International and Melbourne Essendon, reports the Illawarra Mercury. The flights could start in October, pending negotiations. Shellharbour City Council, which manages the airport, is considering offering an exclusivity deal to JetGo.
Located 70 kilometres south of Sydney on Australia's east coast, Wollongong has not seen regular service for almost a decade since Qantas (QF, Sydney Kingsford Smith) withdrew from the Melbourne route. As part of commencing regular operations again, the airport will utilise a temporary structure while the council builds a new terminal as part of a AUD14 million upgrade.
JetGo's Managing Director, Paul Bredereck, said that the airport was attractive to the airline as it is the only major Australian city without scheduled services.
