NewGen Airways (Bangkok Don Mueang) has announced plans to start scheduled passenger flights out of Nakhon Ratchasima/Korat in December this year marking the eastern Thai airfield's first commercial services in two years.

Airline chief executive Jarurnpong Sornprasit told The Bangkok Post flights to Chiang Mai and Phuket would look to tap Nakhon Ratchasima province's untapped tourism potential.

Built in 1994 at a cost of THB470 million baht, the airfield features a 2,100 metre-long runway. Prior to NexGen's arrival, several other airlines had attempted to run regular flights to the capital, Bangkok, albeit without much financial success.
