The airport serving Medicine Hat, a city located in southeast Alberta, 295 kilometres southeast of Calgary, will close to all traffic in May next year to allow for runway resurfacing works.

According to a municipal notice, the closure will affect its primary runway, the 1,500 metre-long 03/21, and will last a total of twenty-four days between May 7 and 31, 2018.

Among the operators most affected is Air Georgian (operating as Air Canada Express) which offers daily shuttles to Calgary using Beech 1900D equipment.

Integra Air (Lethbridge) has complained that the suspension of services for a month would force the carrier to incur CAD90,000 Canadian dollars (USD70,520) in losses given the need to pay wages for eleven staff. CEO John Macek told Medicine Hat News that were the airfield's shorter runway, the 870 metre-long 09/27, to be usable during the repaving process, Integra would be able to continue to operate scheduled flights to Edmonton International using its Beech (twin turboprop) King Air.
