Over 400 flights have been affected by the closure of Denpasar Ngurah Rai International Airport after the eruption of the Mount Agung volcano in the northern part of Bali, the Indonesian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has announced.

The airport, located in the southern part of the island some 60 kilometres away from the erupting volcano, has been closed since 0600L on November 27 (2200Z on November 26).

The total of 445 affected flights so far include cancelled and diverted operations. The DGCA said in a statement that the eruption has affected 249 domestic and 196 international flights with the number likely to rise as the airport remains closed until further notice. Among the airlines most affected are Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Indonesia AirAsia, Citilink and Indonesia AirAsia X. According to Flightradar ADS-B data, flights operated by international airlines such as Jetstar Airways, Scoot, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways International were also cancelled.

Mount Agung, the highest peak in Bali, is an active volcano which previously last erupted in 1963.
