FedEx Express (FX, Memphis International) opened a new cargo facility at Shanghai Pudong on January 8, aiming to improve service for customers in eastern China shipping goods to the United States and Europe.
The new 134,000-square-metre hub can process up to 36,000 packages an hour and besides sorting facilities, it also includes dedicated areas for China Customs and China Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine (CIQ), a cold chain centre providing temperature-controlled storage for, among others, pharmaceutical goods, and office space. It is the largest cargo facility at the Chinese gateway.
FedEx Express currently operates 66 weekly flights out of Shanghai Pudong. The cargo specialist also has own international cargo facilities in China at Beijing Capital and Guangzhou.
In related news, FedEx is looking to invest USD35.4 million into the expansion of cargo facilities at its main hub at Memphis International. The cargo specialist applied for a building permit with the Memphis-Shelby County Construction Code Enforcement office.
Currently, FedEx's facility at Memphis covers some 344,000 square metres and is the operator's largest hub. According to Airports Council International figures, Memphis was the second-busiest airport by cargo traffic in 2016, trailing Hong Kong International.
