São José dos Campos Professor Urbano Ernesto Stumpf in southern Brazil, home of the Embraer assembly plant, is in talks with airlines regarding the resumption of scheduled operations, Agoravale has reported.

The airport, which is also used by the military, does not currently see any scheduled traffic but could handle up to 3.2 million passengers per year, airport manager Marcelo Rodolfo Silva said.

São José dos Campos last saw scheduled passenger operations in June 2016 when TAM Linhas Aéreas (São Paulo Congonhas) terminated a daily return service to Brasília Juscelino Kubitschek International. Cargo operations also existed in the past, with Varig Log (São Paulo Guarulhos) among others.

Located around 80 kilometres to the north-east from São Paulo Guarulhos, São José dos Campos has been managed by the state-owned airport operator Infraero since 1996. Infraero sees potential for both passenger traffic to the facility, mostly concentrated on the leisure market, as well as cargo services.
