Buta Airways (J2, Baku) launched its first-ever service to the European Union with a 1x weekly flight connecting Baku to Sofia on January 16.

Bulgaria is holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union until the end of June 2018, which means there is a higher number of political and economic events in the country.

A unit of AZAL Azerbaijan Airlines (J2, Baku), Buta Airways is a low-cost virtual carrier which, until now, had focused on Russia where it serves Moscow Vnukovo (out of Baku and Gyandzha), Kazan Int'l, Mineralnye Vody, and St. Petersburg. It also flies to Tbilisi, Antalya, Kyiv Igor Sikorsky, Tehran Imam Khomeini, and Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen. All routes are operated under AZAL's J2 code.

AZAL currently serves four cities in the European Union out of Baku: Berlin Tegel, London Heathrow, Milan Malpensa, and Paris CDG.

According to the ch-aviation fleets module, Buta Airways currently operates six E190ARs and one E170LR.
