The Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has confirmed it has withdrawn Jetways Airlines' Regulated Agent Certificate (RAC) while it carries out investigations into the carrier's alleged breaches of security at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta Int'l Airport.
The regulator said in a statement that the RAC permits airlines to conduct their own cargo operations at the JKIA Cargo Terminal.
The local airline is alleged to have been clandestinely flying miraa/khat to Somalia, several days before its premises at the Kenya Airfreight Handling Ltd centre had been completed.
According to The Standard, its investigative report had found that Jetways' warehouse did not have a Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Customs centre wherein officers are required to monitor all goods coming into and out of the country.
The facility had earlier been under the control and oversight of Kenya Airways (KQ, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta) which, on becoming aware of Jetways' alleged actions and the lack of adequate security oversight, informed the KCAA.
KCAA Director General Gilbert Kibe has since warned that additional punitive measures could be taken against the airline pending the outcome of the investigation.
Jetways operates a fleet of two Fokker 50s and two Fokker 50(F)s on passenger and cargo flights throughout Kenya and Central/East Africa.
