FedEx Express (FX, Memphis International) has announced plans to invest more than USD1 billion in its main hub at Memphis International in order to improve the facility's efficiency and capacity.

The logistics conglomerate plans to build a new sorting facility and update the existing infrastructure with more modern systems. The investment would also include the construction of a bulk truck loading building and a new area to improve handling of oversized shipments. Following the plan's approval, construction is expected to begin in 2019 and be completed by 2025.

"Modernization and expansion of the Memphis hub will ensure that we continue to provide outstanding service to our customers around the world and make this an even better place to work for the thousands of team members here who keep our operations running every day and night," FedEx Chairman and CEO Frederick W. Smith has said.

FedEx already employs 11,000 staff at its Memphis hub. The Tennessean airport is the second busiest cargo gateway in the world, trailing only Hong Kong International.
