VivaColombia (Medellín José Maria Córdova) has announced it has opened a base in Santa Marta, a Caribbean port city in Northern Colombia. According to the budget carrier, the base will be manned with two A320 Family aircraft from the end of October this year.

"This is a very important announcement for Grupo Viva and also for the country and its connectivity. With this new base of operations, we hope to open new direct routes that are not operated by other airlines such as Santa Marta-San Andrés Island, Santa Marta-Bucaramanga and Santa Marta-Pereira or Cartago," Felix Antelo, CEO of Viva Air, said.

"We expect to transport more than 1.1 million passengers in the first year on routes to and from Santa Marta and generate market growth of more than 30% through our low rates to encourage more direct and indirect jobs."

Antelo also said the base would see the strengthening of routes from the LCC's two main bases - Medellín José Maria Córdova and Bogotá - through the doubling of the number of weekly flights.
