Volaris (Y4, México City International) has announced that its Volaris Costa Rica (Q6, San José Juan Santamaría) unit will suspend flights to Managua with effect from July 1 onwards.

In a statement, the LCC's Costa Rica general manager, Fernando Naranjo, cited the violent disturbances and political instability that has affected Nicaragua in recent days.

"Unfortunately, market conditions do not allow us to maintain our operations there, so we have, therefore, had to adopt this provision," he said.

Volaris Costa Rica currently connects Managua with each of Los Angeles International (via San Salvador International), and San José Juan Santamaría.

Nicaragua has been inundated by political and social upheavals since April of this year when pension reforms were enacted. Since then, violent clashes between police and protesters calling for Daniel Ortega and his wife and vice-president, Rosario Murillo, to leave power have claimed over 200 lives.
