Osaka Kansai fully reopened on September 21, 2018, following 16 days of operational problems caused by serious damage the airport suffered during the Typhoon Jebi on September 4, The Japan Times has reported.

The airport initially closed completely on September 5 after the only bridge connecting the airport, which is located on a man-made island, with the mainland was damaged by a tanker ship. Heavy rainfall also led to a flooding of both terminals and one of two runways.

Terminal 2, normally hosting low-cost carriers, reopened on September 7, followed by parts of terminal 1 on September 14.

As of September 21, passenger operations resumed to the pre-typhoon level, although cargo operations are still affected and only 90% of the normal traffic resumed.

During the closure of Kansai, some of the flights were diverted to the nearby Osaka Itami and Kobe.

According to the ch-aviation capacity module, ANA - All Nippon Airways and its LCC unit Peach Aviation are the largest carriers at Osaka Kansai with a combined market share of 22.2% by capacity.
