Karumba in northern Australia has secured year-round permanent air traffic after the positive results of a trial connection run by Rex - Regional Express (ZL, Wagga Wagga), Australia's Mining Monthly has reported.

The city in northern Queensland, which is home to a large zinc mine, used to have seasonal flights during the annual floods in the region, but last year the local authorities partnered with REX to evaluate the demand for a year-round service.

Following the positive evaluation, REX will continue to serve Karumba 2x weekly using its Saab 340B equipment as a part of its hopper service connecting the region's mining outposts with major urban centres, departing from Cairns via Normanton, Karumba, Mornington, Doomadgee to Mount Isa. The route will be operated on Tuesday westwards to Mount Isa and on Thursdays eastwards to Cairns.
