Thai AirAsia (FD, Bangkok Don Mueang) has announced it will open a new base at Chiang Rai on January 30, 2019, launching four new routes out of the northern Thai city.

The LCC will thenceforth operate from Chiang Rai to Phuket (3x weekly), Macau International (3x weekly), Singapore Changi (3x weekly), and Kuala Lumpur International (4x weekly).

According to ch-aviation capacity module, Thai AirAsia currently operates to Chiang Rai from Bangkok Don Mueang (42x weekly) and Hat Yai (7x weekly).

Chiang Rai currently sees 21 weekly international departures to destinations in mainland China and Hong Kong International. Except for the 4x weekly service to Changsha Huanghua operated by Thai Lion Air (SL, Bangkok Don Mueang), all other routes are served by Chinese or Hong Kongese airlines.

The Thai unit of AirAsia Group already operates bases at Bangkok Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hat Yai, Krabi, and Utapao.
