The Mexican government has granted Emirates (EK, Dubai International) fifth freedom traffic rights for daily services from México City International via Barcelona El Prat to Dubai International, The National has reported.

The Emirati carrier previously scrapped its plan to launch the service to Mexico earlier this year after the authorities had only granted it fifth freedom traffic rights for 3x weekly flights.

"Discussions are ongoing with the Mexican authorities on this matter and once the airport authorities in Mexico confirm and approve the daily operation we have the intent to commence service," an Emirates spokesman said.

According to the ch-aviation capacity module, Mexico does not currently see any scheduled services to the Middle East. In North America, Emirates operates scheduled passenger flights to Boston, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Fort Lauderdale International, Houston Intercontinental, Los Angeles International, New York JFK, New York Newark, Orlando International, San Francisco, Seattle Tacoma International, Toronto Pearson, and Washington Dulles.

There are currently no direct scheduled flights between Barcelona and Mexico City.
