Air France-KLM has announced it will "launch a project studying the future of the Joon (France) (Paris CDG) brand" which will eventually lead to the closure of the brand and its integration into Air France (AF, Paris CDG).

The Franco-Dutch group said in a statement that Joon, a semi-low-cost unit targeting younger customers on short- and long-haul routes, was "difficult to understand from the outset for customers, for employees, for markets and for investors."

The holding also added that the creation of Joon led to a multiplication of brands which ultimately weakened the group's appeal.

Air France-KLM did not give any specifics as to when and how the integration will proceed.

According to the ch-aviation fleets module, Joon currently operates seven A320-200s, five A321-200s, and four A340-300s. All of the aircraft were previously transferred from Air France to the new virtual subsidiary. Joon deploys its fleet out of Paris CDG to ten European destinations, as well as Cairo International, Cape Town International, Fortaleza International, Mahé, and Mumbai International.

Until the reintegration of the unit is completed, Joon will continue to operate all flights. Subsequently, the routes will be taken over by Air France directly. Since the low-cost unit does not have its own AOC, all its services are operated under Air France's IATA code already now.

Joon was also due to take deliveries of A350-900s shortly. The aircraft will instead be delivered directly to Air France with a "more economical cabin configuration".

"The simplification of the brand portfolio, while capitalising on the Air France mother brand, is an undeniable asset for our employees, our customers, and indeed all stake holders," the group concluded.
