Sun Country Airlines (SY, Minneapolis/St. Paul) is looking at opening a crew base at Portland International Airport, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) has said.

The union said in a statement that the carrier's management had asked for negotiations over the new base. The first set of talks took place on February 11.

According to the ch-aviation capacity module, Sun Country operates 18 weekly flights per week out of Portland to 9 destinations across the US, proffering a total of 3,024 seats/week. Overall, it is the airport's sixth largest carrier by weekly seating capacity behind Alaska Airlines (97,825), Southwest Airlines (37,337), Delta Air Lines (24,439), United Airlines (17,831), and American Airlines (12,532).

If opened, Portland would be Sun Country's first outside of its Minneapolis/St. Paul primary base. At present, the leisure carrier operates four B737-700s and twenty-five B737-800s on flights spanning the United States as well as Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Belize, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and Aruba.
