flycana (Santo Domingo Las Américas) has signed an agreement with Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) over the use of Santo Domingo Las Américas International Airport (AILA) as a base.

The start-up said in a statement that it is currently in the process of finalising an investment of USD80 million ahead of a planned launch during the last quarter of the year.

"We are very excited to announce the selection of AILA as the base airport for our operations," airline founder and president, Victor Pacheco Méndez, said. "We know that Santo Domingo, a city that funnels in the largest population in the country, will be very convenient for all our passengers to fly from the terminal located a few minutes from the city, as well as connect with the beaches of La Romana and Punta Cana."

Using licences acquired during its previous iteration as Dominican Wings, Flycana will operate as an ultra-low-cost carrier serving over 50 destinations in the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Operationally, network specialist Nikolay Maltsev told Routes Online that Flycana is studying either A320neo or the B737 MAX for its fleeting needs. Once funding has been secured, the airline plans to launch with two aircraft and grow to 25-28 aircraft within five years.
