Malta MedAir (MT, Malta International) is exploring options to launch domestic public service helicopter service between Malta International and Gozo via a new subsidiary, Malta Today has reported.

The Maltese government has been trying to revive the service between the country's two main islands for some time. Gozo and Malta lost helicopter connectivity in 2006 when Spain's Heli Sureste (Alicante) folded. Subsequently, the two islands were connected between 2007 and 2012 by seaplane flights. Since they ended, Gozo and Malta are linked exclusively by ferry services.

Malta MedAir does not currently operate any helicopters. Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi said during a press conference that the airline was already talking to Airbus Helicopters about sourcing equipment for domestic flights.

The carrier was set up in 2018 as a subsidiary of state-owned Air Malta (KM, Malta International). The flag carrier subsequently transferred some of its most valuable assets, including slots at European airports. Malta MedAir also took over one A320-200 from its parent.
