Regional Express Americas (Bogotá) has begun scheduled flight operations after having been given the go-ahead by the Colombian civil aviation authority (Aeronáutica Civil - Aerocivil) last week.

In a statement, the regulator said it had given the Avianca subsidiary the green light to commence flights on March 1. Initial services will focus on flights from its Bogotá hub to each of Villavicencio, Ibagué Perales, and Popayán.

"For Aerocivil, it is important to continue strengthening the country's connectivity of the country with new operators that reach all regions of Colombia, while facilitating access to air transport with more and better services for travellers," Aerocivil director general, Juan Carlos Salazar Gómez, said. "We are working hand in hand with the policies of President Ivan Duque to build a country of equity and entrepreneurship and so that all Colombians can discover their country by air."

By the middle of March, Regional Express is expected to start serving new destinations such as Yopal, Manizales, Neiva, and Florencia Gustavo Artunduaga Paredes among others.

Operations are on-board ATR72-600s transferred from parent Avianca which, thus far, include HK-5000 (msn 1142) and HK-5041 (msn 1160).
