Air Malta (Malta International) is planning to launch medium-haul flights beyond Europe and the Mediterranean and is targeting Mumbai International as its first such destination, Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi told the media.

"We now have integration in the routes we serve in Europe and North Africa, and can at this point even go beyond," Chairman Charles Mangion confirmed, as quoted by Malta Today.

The Maltese carrier will use its A320-200neo on the prospective medium-haul routes. The carrier operates a single unit of the type in addition to six in-house A320-200s, one more A320 wet-leased from subsidiary Malta MedAir (MT, Malta International), and a single A319-100. In 2018, Air Malta also committed to dry-leasing a further two A320neo.

Currently, Air Malta's network out of Malta International extends to Europe, Tel Aviv Ben Gurion, Cairo International, Casablanca Mohamed V, and Tunis.
