KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL, Amsterdam Schiphol) has announced plans to add Guanacaste as a stop to its 4x weekly Amsterdam Schiphol-San José Juan Santamaría service starting October 27.

The Dutch carrier has been operating to Costa Rica on a seasonal basis in the winter season 2017/2018 and has so far only served the capital's Juan Santamaría airport.

From this winter, it will now offer a triangle routing from Amsterdam via San José and Liberia back to Amsterdam using its B787-9s.

KLM's new service is the first intercontinental regular service for Liberia. It is currently served domestically and regionally from Costa Esmeralda, México City International, Panamá City Tocumen International as well as from many Canadian and US airports. TUI Airways (BY, London Luton) operates weekly scheduled year-round charter flights to Liberia from London Gatwick using B787-8 aircraft.

KLM itself has a limited regional presence and currently serves México City and Panamá City year-round in addition to the seasonal Costa Rica flights.
