Fiji Airways (FJ, Nadi) has suspended the use of a B737-800 it had wet-leased from Miami Air International (Miami International) after one of the Floridian ACMI/charter specialist's other aircraft of the type suffered a serious incident while landing at Jacksonville Towers, FL on Sunday, May 5.

N732MA (msn 30618) had just landed in Florida from Guantánamo Bay when it overran the runway and ended in the shallow waters of the St. Johns River. While the 18-year-old jet sustained serious damage, none of the 143 passengers and crew onboard were injured.

In a follow-up statement to the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), an airline spokesman said they were aware of the incident and were monitoring the situation closely.

"The Miami Air aircraft leased by Fiji Airways will not operate a Fiji Airways service until we know more about the incident in Jacksonville. The safety of our passengers is, and always will be our number one priority," he said.

Fiji Airways had used B737-800 N739MA (msn 30670) to mitigate the shortfall in narrowbody capacity brought on by the global grounding of the B737 MAX.
