Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) has firmed up options for five additional A220-100s, bringing to 95 the total number of A220s the Atlanta-based carrier has on order from Airbus Canada.

In a statement, Airbus said Delta is the first operator to select the new increased maximum takeoff weight option for its entire fleet from 2020.

The European manufacturer said in May that it would increase the A220 Family's MTOW by 2,268 kgs (2.3 metric tonnes) thereby increasing its range by 450 nautical miles (833 kilometres). As such, the -100's range will grow to 3,400 nautical miles (6,300 kilometres) while the -300s will reach 3,350 nautical miles (6,200 kilometres).

Under its 2016 order with Bombardier Aerospace, the US carrier had originally committed to seventy-five A220-100s with options for fifty more. In December last year, it firmed up fifteen options while revising the order to include fifty A220-300s and forty A220-100s. With this latest revision, its order book now constitutes forty-five A220-100s, fifty A220-300s, and thirty outstanding options.

The US launch operator for the A220, Delta currently has fourteen A220-100s in service. Its first A220-300 is due in 2020.
