The Government of the Falkland Islands says it has finalised an agreement with LATAM Airlines Brasil (JJ, São Paulo Congonhas) over the introduction of a second route connecting the UK overseas territory to mainland South America.

The LATAM Airlines Group subsidiary was identified as the preferred bidder following a tender last year.

According to a statement issued on July 5, LATAM Airlines Brazil will commence weekly return flights from São Paulo Guarulhos to Mount Pleasant International from November 6, 2019 onwards. Once a month, the service will stop in Córdoba International in Argentina on both the inbound and outbound sectors.

The South Atlantic archipelago is currently connected to Santiago de Chile via Punta Arenas International in Chile through a weekly LATAM Airlines (LA, Santiago de Chile) flight. Once a month, this service stops in Rio Gallegos, Argentina.

"We have made no secret of our determination to build better air links between the Falkland Islands and the rest of the world, and I am certain that this latest development will be successful," MLA Barry Elsby, Portfolio Lead said. "This new flight, together with our plans for a new port and air terminal, will support long term economic growth in the islands and will result in significant growth for our tourist industry in particular."
