British Airways (BA, London Heathrow) has suspended its daily London Heathrow-Cairo International, Egypt service for a period fo seven days starting Saturday, July 20.
"We constantly review our security arrangements at all our airports around the world and have suspended flights to Cairo for seven days as a precaution to allow for further assessment," the carrier said in a statement to customers. "The safety and security of our customers and crew is always our priority, and we would never operate an aircraft unless it was safe to do so."
Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt International) announced a similar suspension albeit only for Cairo-bound flights on Saturday, July 20. Neither airline expanded on the grounds for the move.
The Egyptian Ministry of Civil Aviation has since said in its own statement that it has confirmed with the UK Embassy in Cairo that the decision to suspend flights had been taken by British Airways alone and that neither the UK Ministry of Transport or the Foreign Office had issued any formal directive ordering so.
