SpiceJet (SG, Delhi International) is planning to resume its daily flights from Kolkata to Gangtok on October 27, 2019, hoping that the end of the rainy season will allow for more regular services to the latter airport, The Sikkim Express has reported.
The Indian LCC suspended flights to Gangtok on June 1, 2019, citing "unpredictable weather" as a reason for operational unreliability.
Following the resumption, flights will operate onboard Dash 8-400 turboprops.
Gangtok is the only airport in the state of Sikkim. The airport was opened in October 2018. It lies at 1,399 metres above mean sea level and was constructed on a mountain slope, making it one of the tallest reinforced soil structures in the world. It lacks an Instrumental Landing System (ILS), making operations in poor weather very challenging.
No other airline serves Gangtok.
