The Ghanaian Government has set in motion plans to establish a new national carrier following the signing of tentative aircraft order commitments during the ongoing Dubai Airshow 2019.

During the event, Ghanaian Minister of Aviation, Joseph Kofi Adda, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Boeing (BOE, Washington National) for the purchase of three B787-9s. At the same time, he signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with De Havilland Aircraft of Canada (DHC, Toronto Downsview) for six Dash 8-400s.

According to Adda, the yet-to-be-named carrier will develop Accra Kotoka International Airport into a strategic hub funnelling traffic from across Ghana and West Africa through to destinations in Europe, North America and Asia.

In May this year, government finalized a strategic partnership agreement with Ethiopian Airlines (ET, Addis Ababa International) wherein the former will hold a controlling 51% and the latter 49% of the nascent carrier. In the longterm, however, Accra has indicated its intention to divest some of its shares to local Ghanaian entities.

No formal launch date for the start-up has yet been specified.
