The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has granted TAROM (RO, Bucharest Henri Coanda) a renewal exemption for two years on its Foreign Air Carrier Permit (FACP).

The effective dates of the exemption authority granted by the DOT are from November 14, 2019 until the same date in 2021. The Romanian carrier had filed for the extension on October 16. The decision means that the carrier now has two years to put itself into a position to launch services to the US.

Earlier this autumn Tarom had indicated it was planning to dry-lease two A330s to relaunch long-haul flights in May 2020. Sources within the airline said that Tarom had already applied for slots at both New York JFK and New York Newark, and at Chicago O'Hare airports.

Just Us Air (Bucharest Baneasa) became the second Romanian airline to be granted a FACP by the US DOT when it received its approval at the beginning of November.

According to the ch-aviation schedules module, no carrier presently offers flights between any points in Romania and the US. Tarom had previously served JFK with its now-retired A310-300 fleet in the past.
