TAP Air Portugal (TP, Lisbon) is intending to commence a 5x weekly service between Ponta Delgada and Boston from June 4, 2020, in direct competition with incumbent Azores Airlines (S4, Ponta Delgada) and its first intercontinental service from the Azores.

TAP will utilise its A321-200neo fleet on the 2,081-nautical mile (3,854-kilometre) sector to the US city. Flights TP219/220 to Boston are currently scheduled to operate until October 24, 2020.

In the Summer 2019 season, Azores Airlines operated a 10x weekly service to Boston, its only service to the US. The only other US route to Ponta Delgada last summer was a daily service from New York JFK operated by Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson).

The Portuguese flag carrier also flies to Boston from its main hub in Lisbon, and this summer it operated a daily A330-900 service to the city. TAP's only other routes currently to Ponta Delgada are domestic services from Lisbon (18x weekly) and Porto (6x weekly).
