Grupo Aeroméxico has indicated that it is willing to invest in the construction of Terminal 3 at México City International in order to improve the infrastructure and user experience at its biggest hub. However, plans for the beginning of construction and a likely opening date remain unclear.
According to a report in Mexican property and lifestyle publication Real Estate Market, the airline's willingness to participate in the build was stated by Christian Pastrana, Director of Corporate Communications for the airline. He said the Skyteam carrier is contemplating financing part of the terminal, if the government lacks resources, since they want to accelerate work by using private resources.
“I don't know if the issue is because there are no resources. We would be willing to invest because the airport's capacity is undoubtedly exceeded and Grupo Aeroméxico is willing to make a good agreement with the federal government,” Pastrana said at a recent meeting in the country's capital. In 2016, the group supported infrastructure work at the airport, again due to a lack of public resources, as it contributed about MXN200 million pesos (USD10.6 million) for projects in Terminal 2.
Reported on Mexico News Daily earlier this year, the Mexican federal government had apparently allocated MXN4 billion peso (USD213 million) for upgrades at the capital city airport, including the new terminal. At the time, Terminal 3 was meant to open in 2020, but it now seems clear that the government intends to only start the construction of the facility in the second half of 2020. That said, the airport's management has apparently now cancelled the tender on the project, according to the Real Estate Market article.
Mexico City is Aeroméxico's most significant base as the airport commands close to 44% of the airline's weekly seat capacity. The country's flag carrier is the largest airline at the airport in terms of share of seats, holding 36%, ahead of Interjet (AIJ, Toluca) and Volaris (Y4, México City International), which control 26% and 14% respectively.
