Between September 16 and 21, 2020, Bologna will temporarily close its runway for air traffic to allow for rehabilitation works of a large part of the runway and taxiway pavement, including horizontal markings and ground lights, according to a statement on the airport's website.

As a result of the planned airfield maintenance planning, Bologna will be closed to air traffic from 0001L on September 16 until 0600L on September 21. No landings or take-offs will be allowed during this period. The airport says that its serving airlines have already been informed, and will decide whether to cancel their operations or move them to alternate airports.

According to the ch-aviation schedules module, Ryanair (FR, Dublin International) is currently the biggest carrier in Bologna controlling 39% of weekly frequencies, followed by Alitalia (AZA, Rome Fiumicino) and Air France (AF, Paris CDG), both with 6%. In terms of weekly capacity, Bologna is Italy's fifth largest, behind Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, Milan Bergamo, and Milan Linate.

In September 2018, Bologna's runway was closed for four days when 1,000 metres of the strip and some taxiways were worked on. This year's temporary closure will see the remaining 1,800 metres of the airport's 2,800-metre runway given an overhaul.
