AirAsia (AK, Kuala Lumpur International) has announced it will resume domestic operations in Malaysia on June 10, following the relaxation of a lockdown in the country. Meanwhile, Malaysia Airlines (MH, Kuala Lumpur International) disclosed plans to significantly ramp up its hitherto skeleton domestic network and relaunch some international routes on July 1.
The Malaysian flag carrier said that starting immediately, it would connect Kuala Lumpur International with 14 domestic destinations. It will subsequently ramp up frequencies on these routes. Beginning in July, the airline plans to operate international flights to a total of 28 destinations, mostly regional in South-East Asia, East Asia, and Australia. The carrier's only long-haul westbound route will be to London Heathrow.
Within the AirAsia Group, Philippines AirAsia (Z2, Manila Ninoy Aquino International) resumed domestic services on June 5. However, the unit has separately announced further job cuts affecting around 12% of its staff.
"Despite all our efforts to curb the effects of the pandemic, AirAsia has made the difficult decision of reducing the company's workforce, but has done everything to keep the number of affected employees to a minimum," the Filipino unit said.
Indonesia AirAsia (QZ, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) said it would resume domestic routes from Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta to Denpasar and Medan Kuala Namu on June 19.
