Michigan’s Ironwood Gogebic-Iron County Airport has closed to all scheduled flights until mid-July owing to ongoing runway works.
The airport said the rehabilitation of runway 09/27 will shut flights between June 1 and July 15 while runway lighting reconstruction will close it again from August 13 to 20. Work is being carried out under a Federal Aviation Administration discretionary grant worth USD5.1 million, reported Your Daily Globe. Mathy Construction Company is the general contractor for the project.
The airport, in Gogebic Country, is served by small carriers subsidised by the Essential Air Service programme, including Air Choice One (St. Louis Lambert International) and Boutique Air (4B, San Francisco), with the latter due to take over from the former using PC-12 aircraft.
Air Choice One will resume its flight schedule on July 16 using Cessna (single turboprop) Grand Caravans and run until its contract end date of July 31. Boutique Air will for the first time begin operations on August 1 after winning the Essential Air Service contract earlier this year. Boutique Air will provide daily nonstop roundtrip service to Chicago O'Hare and Minneapolis St. Paul International.
