Greenland Express (Aalborg) and Aluu Airlines (Nuuk) have both secured official authorization to operate scheduled domestic Greenlandic flights following a government meeting on Tuesday, April 7. Currently, the local market is dominated by Air Greenland (GL, Nuuk).

“I have great expectations for both Aluu Airlines and Greenland Express which will soon plan, advertise and start selling seats on their upcoming routes both within Greenland and to and from Greenland," Minister of Housing, Construction and Infrastructure Knud Kristiansen said. "I have an expectation that increased competition in the air will improve prices for the benefit of travellers.”

Danish virtual carrier Greenland Express, which expects to resume flights between Denmark and Greenland on May 11, says it is looking to start domestic flights before the end of August this year with Nuuk, Upernavik, Ilulissat, Aasiaat, Sisimiut, Maniitsoq, Paamiut all being studied. In addition, it is also considering helicopter flights to cities in southern Greenland. An announcement concerning exact destinations is expected in June.

For its part, local start-up Aluu Airlines says that once it is cleared to commence operations, it will use ATR - Avions de Transport Régional turboprops to connect Nuuk with Ilulissat and Kangerlussuaq locally and Reykjavik Keflavik and Copenhagen Kastrup regionally.
