  • Read more 07APR2014: Brazil's Azul in talks with Airbus, Boeing over widebody order
Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (AD, Campinas Viracopos) is reportedly in talks with Airbus Industrie (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac), Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) and lessors regarding the possible purchase of widebody aircraft for use on long-haul flights.

Quoting anonymous sources close to the carrier's operations, Bloomberg newswire says among the aircraft being considered are the A330-200, Airbus' upgraded A330neo and Boeing's early model B787-8s (the so called "Terrible Teens").

The Brazilian LCC is also considering narrowbody airframes such as the A321neo, the B737 MAX and the upgraded Embraer (São José dos Campos) EMB-190-E2 for use on its existing domestic network which it currently serves with ATR42s and ATR72s as well as EMB-190s and EMB-195s.

Each type is currently being carefully studied and analysed in terms of how it would fit into the airline's current operations, the newswire said.

Though no specific date for the launch of international flights has yet been announced, industry spectators have pointed to 2016 as a possibility given the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August of that year.

Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (AD, Campinas Viracopos) is to commence services from Parnaíba to Teresina and Fortaleza effective April 4. The flights will operate on board an ATR72-600. Located 8km from downtown Parnaíba, the airport underwent remodelling in 2011 and had its runway lengthened by 400m from 2'100m to 2'500m. Despite these improvements, the airport had, until now, failed to attract any scheduled passenger traffic.
  • Read more 26FEB2014: Brazil's Azul studying international market prospects
Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (AD, Campinas Viracopos) has reached market saturation in Brazil and is now reportedly studying the possibility of expanding its business internationally.

Brazilian paper O Estado de S. Paulo says Azul began seriously studying the prospect of international flights in 2012 but was forced to shelve them when a merger with TRIP Linhas Aéreas (T4, Campinas Viracopos) was announced later the same year.

Azul currently serves 104 destinations with 235 routes on offer, all of which are in Brazil.

"A company that already has an 18% market share, 10'000 employees and 140 aircraft has to think about its next step. International flights are the next step, " Azul's communications director, Gianfranco Beting, said.

Among the strongest prospects for flights are the United States - New York JFK and Fort Lauderdale Int'l in particular. In addition to their popularity with the Brazilian travelling public, both destinations are also jetBlue Airways (B6, New York JFK) hubs. Azul's founder David Neeleman was also the founder and first CEO at jetBlue.

The airline has also begun consultations with Airbus Industrie (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) and Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) with the A330 the strongest contender thus far, the paper said.

Funding from the project will likely come from an upcoming IPO.
