  • Read more 09APR2014: Indonesian carriers reconsider plans to move to Jakarta Halim
Indonesia AirAsia (QZ, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) and Tigerair Mandala (RI, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) will not be switching their operations from Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta to Jakarta Halim FlightGlobal has reported. The publication said the AirAsia (AK, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) subsidiary based its decision on a number of factors including Halim's limited slots, and the overall cost and impact on operations of switching from one airport to another. In addition, Halim's status as a domestic airport would negatively impact Air Asia' Indonesian operations given that more than 70% of its traffic is international. As a result, the need to commute from one airport to another would greatly impact the airline's marketability.

Tigerair Mandala on the other hand said splitting operations between two airports would increase its operational costs but did not completely discount the move.

Halim served as Jakarta's primary gateway until the opening of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in 1985, following which it was closed to commercial traffic. In a bid to alleviate congestion at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Halim airport was once more reopened to commercial traffic in January this year offering 60 flight slots per hour.

The airport is currently served by Citilink (QG, Surabaya), Tri-M.G. Intra Asia Airlines (GM, Jakarta Halim), Cardigair (8F, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta), Pelita Air (6D, Jakarta Halim), Gatari Air Service (GHS, Jakarta Halim) and Susi Air (SQS, Jakarta Halim). An application by national carrier Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) to begin flights out of the airport is currently pending.

Citilink (QG, Surabaya) is to roll out its first ever international service - Surabaya to Johor Bahru, Malaysia - effective March 15. In its report, CAPA says the Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) subsidiary has also marked Surabaya to Kuala Lumpur Int'l and Singapore Changi along with Denpasar to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Perth Int'l.

No exact launch date has yet been set for the latter destinations CEO Arif Wibowo said. According to Wibowo, Perth will likely be the last route to launch given Australia's lengthy traffic rights application process. Citilink has already secured approval from Indonesian authorities to begin operating international services.

The advent of international services is expected to both boost the airline's foreign currency coffers as well as cushion its bottom line given Indonesia's weakening Rupiah.

Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Singapore's Gallant Venture to develop both an airport and an MRO facility in Bintan, in the Riau Islands. The hub will compete with the new Lion Airlines (JT, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) hub in neighbouring Batam. The MoU was signed by the President and CEO of PT Garuda Indonesia, Mr. Emirsyah Satar, and the CEO of Gallant Venture Ltd., Mr. Eugene Park at the Singapore Airshow 2014. Under the terms of the agreement, Garuda Indonesia and Gallant Venture will jointly develop Bintan Island as the airline’s new hub with an airport dedicated to Garuda and its subsidiary, Citilink (QG, Surabaya). “This new operation out of Bintan will help strengthen Garuda’s network development, with a potential to connect East Indonesia with West Indonesia and become the meeting point for our internatio nal flights to Europe and the Far East. With our regional fleet (CRJ Aircraft Series and ATR Aircraft Series) stationed in Bintan, Garuda will be able to be more competitive to service the second tier tourist and business destination cities within ASEAN,” said Satar. The first phase will include the development of a runway and a terminal to accommodate initial traffic. Bintan Airport has enough land to develop into a multi terminal airport with two runways. The airport terminal will be connected to a ferry terminal which will connect Singapore and Batam to/from Bintan airport. Gallant Venture Ltd, through its subsidiary company, currently operates ferry services between Bintan and Singapore Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. The Aircraft Maintenance Centre will be part of the 177 hectare Bintan Aerospace Industry Park located in the existing Bintan Industrial Estate adjacent to the runway. The Park will include an Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility for aircraft and components and catering to the manufacturing and assembly of aircraft engines and components as well as aviation training and academy, and research & development. There will also be a dedicated township, including employee compound houses, dormitory, health centre, sports centre, convenient stores, to cater to the management and staff in Bintan Aerospace Industry Park. PT Garuda Maintenance Facility AeroAsia (GMF AeroAsia) and Gallant Venture Ltd will set up a Joint Venture Company to run the MRO facility.

Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) has received interest from four undisclosed companies interested in acquiring a stake in subsidiary, Citilink (QG, Surabaya). Bloomberg Business says the airline's new strategic partner will be announced by June. In his interview, Chief Executive Officer Emirsyah Satar said the Jakarta-based company is currently planning an Initial Public Offering (IPO) for Citilink. The arrival of a new strategic partner is expected to bring with it capital needed to help the airline compete with the likes of Lion Airlines (JT, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta). While Citlink has been a burden to Garuda's bottom-line in recent financial statements, the airline will perform better this year and not incur a loss Mr Satar added.
  • Read more 12JAN2014: Indonesia's Citilink inaugurates Jakarta's upgraded Halim Airport
Citilink (QG, Surabaya) has inaugurated commercial operations at the newly upgraded Jakarta Halim Perdanakusuma Airport with flights to Yogyakarta. The first flight officially touched down on Friday, January 10, 2014. Following the publication of the airport's slot-time schedule, the Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) subsidiary now plans to add flights to Malang, Palembang and Semarang in the near future. Speaking at the inauguration, Indonesia's Deputy Transportation Minister Bambang Susantono told the Jakarta Post that in a bid to ease congestion at Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, other carriers including Garuda, Lion Airlines (JT, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta), Tigerair Mandala (RI, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) and Batik Air (ID, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) also plan to move some of their domestic flight services to Halim. “We have relocated some flights from Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta in order to reduce the backlog during certain hours because that airport can only handle 64 flights per hour, yet it has to deal with 70 flights per hour,” he said.
