AirTran brand retired after last flight on December 28

AirTran Airways (FL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) has officially suspended operations following its last flight, FL1, from Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson to Tampa Int'l in the evening of Sunday, December 28. Southwest Airlines (WN, Dallas Love Field) has gradually taken over the majority of AirTran's network, its fleet of B737-700s and most of its staff as part of an integration process that has taken three years since the acquisition of the LCC by Southwest in 2011.

Southwest close to finalizing AirTran merger

Southwest Airlines (WN, Dallas Love Field) has completed the integration of its AirTran Airways (FL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) subsidiary's booking and frequent flyer functions ahead of its planned total absorption into Southwest on December 28, 2014. Southwest acquired AirTran for USD3.2billion in 2011.

Delta to commence B717 international flights in December

Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) will deploy its fleet of B717-200s on international flights with effect from December of this year. Airline Route reports the Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson-based carrier will deploy the type on flights to Moss Town, Bahamas effective December 20, and to Nassau Int'l effective January 12, 2015.

Canada's WestJet offloads ten B737-700s to Southwest

WestJet (WS, Calgary) has sold ten B737-700s to Southwest Airlines (WN, Dallas Love Field) Canadian Aviation News has reported. The first two jets - C-FWAD (msn 32753) and C-FWAF (msn 32747) - have already been ferried to Everett where they are undergoing conversion into the US budget carrier's configuration.

WestJet operates a fleet of sixty-nine B737-700s while Southwest operates 436 including aircraft with subsidiary AirTran Airways (FL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson).

Frontier to open Miami, Philadelphia bases in December

Frontier Airlines (F9, Denver Int'l) has announced it will develop Miami Int'l and Philadelphia Int'l into its next two bases beginning in December this year. The revitalized ULCC, fresh from its acquisition from Republic Airlines (YX, Chicago O'Hare) by Phoenix-based investment firm, Indigo Partners LLC, will begin direct flights from Miami to Denver Int'l, Philadelphia, New York La Guardia and Chicago O'Hare beginning December 20 with a total of 38 weekly flights.
