  • Read more 24APR2014: Etihad Regional plan a challenge for Etihad as BAZL investigates
Etihad Airways (EY, Abu Dhabi Int'l) has not yet been able to get the desired benefits out of its most recent investment in Darwin Airline (F7, Lugano) (now doing business as Etihad Regional) because its proposed cooperation agreement is still subject to approval from the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (BAZL).

The regulator has officially confirmed to ch-aviation that, in its view, the application to sell joint Etihad/Etihad Regional itineraries is directly related to an inquest into an ongoing foreign ownership and control review of Darwin following Etihad's acquisition of a 33% minority stake.

According to the BAZL, the investment not only affects Swiss interests, but also those of other European countries and therefore warrants a thorough review to ensure Etihad does not "control" Darwin.

As a result of this, Etihad Regional and Etihad Airways have yet to implement any meaningful codeshare or interline agreements. While an interline agreement is technically already in place, Etihad is not yet allowed to sell joint itineraries which include Etihad Regional flights.

On why his carrier has been prevented from bidding for Italian Public Service Obligation routes, Darwin CCO Christian Schneider told ch-aviation: “It seems that a European airline/alliance is trying to prevent us from satisfying the needs of European travelers."

While no carrier in particular was mentioned, Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt Int'l) and its Swiss (LX, Zurich) and Austrian Airlines (OS, Vienna) subsidiaries are obviously the most affected by Etihad's plans in the region.
  • Read more 08APR2014: Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines axe Libya flights
Austrian Airlines (OS, Vienna) and parent Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt Int'l) have indefinitely suspended flights to Tripoli Int'l owing to the precarious security situation in the Libyan capital. In the wake of a series of bombings of Tripoli's main runway in late March, the two carriers, in conjunction with Alitalia (AZ, Rome Fiumicino) and British Airways (BA, London Heathrow), suspended their respective flights.

Alitalia and British Airways have extended a moratorium on flights to the troubled North African country until April 15 at the earliest.

Unrest has continued to grip the country despite the overthrow of strongman Muammur Gaddhafi in 2011.

On Monday, April 8, protesters blocked roads to Tripoli airport for several hours calling for the resignation of the President of the Libyan General National Congress, Nouri Abu Sahmain, and his government whom they accuse of incompetence and mismanagement.
  • Read more 09FEB2014: Austrian Airlines temporarily suspends Baghdad flights
Austrian Airlines (OS, Vienna) has temporarily suspended its 3x weekly flights to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, until February 12, at the very least. According to AustrianAviation.net, no official explanation for the suspension was given other than "operational measures." Baghdad has experienced a resurgence in violence in recent weeks with Baghdad International Airport among the targets. In late January, two rockets were fired at the airport, ostensibly by Al Qaeda-backed Sunni Islamist rebels, hitting a runway and a parked Iraqi Airways (IA, Baghdad) A320-200, YI-ARB (cn 5290).
  • Read more 16JAN2014: Austrian Airlines to resume Tehran flights from mid-March
Austrian Airlines (OS, Vienna) will resume services from Vienna to Tehran Imam Khomeini from 11 March 2014 onwards. Pending regulatory approval, the 5x weekly service will operate onboard either an A319-100 or an A320-200. Flights to the Iranian capital were suspended in January 2013 for reasons including economic and political sanctions on the country coupled with a weak Iranian rial.
  • Read more 18DEC2013: Swiss & Co. take Flughafen Zürich AG to court over fee hikes
Swiss (LX, Zurich) has taken Flughafen Zürich AG, the owner of Zurich airport, to court over its latest round of service charge increases which now include parking fees for aircraft. German aviation portal aero.de says Swiss, in tandem with Austrian Airlines (OS, Vienna) and several other carriers, have objected to the increases saying that should they come into effect on February 1, 2014 as advertised, then collectively, they would represent an additional CHF115million (USD127million) in overheads that they would have to pay over the period 2014 to 2017. A coalition of airlines and Flughafen Zürich AG had attempted to negotiate a compromise earlier in the year though these talks reportedly collapsed. "Compared to similar airports such as Vienna or Brussels National, the fees would be need to reduced by about 20 percent. The problem is also that there are no efficiency incentives for airport operators," said Rainer Hiltebrand, Swiss' Chief Operating Officer.
