  • Read more 05FEB2014: Zagreb to offer up Croatia Airlines to the Chinese
Croatia Airlines (OU, Zagreb) owner, the Croat government, is set to pass legislation allowing it to hold direct talks with investors interested in acquiring a stake in the carrier. The move comes after a tender issued last year for the privatization of the airline failed to garner any responses. EX-YU Aviation News reports that China Southern Airlines (CZ, Guangzhou) and Hainan Airlines (HU, Haikou) are believed to be the strongest contenders despite not submitting any bids last year. Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) had also reportedly shown interest in a stake. On the back of an anticipated upswing in the airline's profitability, bureaucrats are expected to travel to China where they will present their new privatisation model in an attempt to garner fresh interest. Amid declining passenger numbers and increased competition out of Zagreb, the sale of the airline is now seen as a priority for the government.

Montenegro Airlines (YM, Podgorica) is to be once more offered up for privatization the country’s Privatisation and Capital Investment Council has announced. According to EX-YU Aviation News, the airline's shareholding will be sold via a public tender. “We cannot specify at this point in time the pace in which the privatisation process will take place”, a statement read. Previous attempts to offload the loss-making airline from the national fiscus have met with failure. In 2009, a joint El Al Israel Airlines (LY, Tel Aviv Ben Gurion) and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development bid for control of the airline and Podgorica and Tivat airports failed when government balked at the offer. A later 2011 tender was met with no responses despite Arkia Israeli Airlines (IZ, Tel Aviv Ben Gurion), El Al and Etihad Airways (EY, Abu Dhabi Int'l) having all purchased tender forms. Turkish Airlines (TK, Istanbul Atatürk) was also linked to a potential take over though that too failed to materialize. Montenegro Airlines joins the likes of Croatia Airlines (OU, Zagreb) and Adria Airways (JP, Ljubljana) in looking for new investors capable of injecting fresh vitality and capital into them. Thus far, of the former Yugoslavian carriers, only Air Serbia (JU, Belgrade) has been fortunate enough to land a wealthy partner in the form of Etihad Airways (EY, Abu Dhabi Int'l).

Croatia Airlines (OU, Zagreb) will partner Trade Air (C3, Zagreb) in rolling out new domestic flights beginning Summer 2014. EX-YU Aviation News says the routes will operate on-board an EMB-120 leased from Budapest Aircraft Services (BPS, Budapest) and will encompass Zagreb to Rijeka, Rijeka to Split, Split to Dubrovnik and Dubrovnik to Rijeka. In addition, Croatia Airlines will maintain flights between Osijek and Zagreb launched this winter. The new domestic flights will be launched on April 4. All of them will operate once per week, every Friday, while the Rijeka - Zagreb flights, launching on April 6, will operate every Sunday. The new services will operate under Trade Air flight numbers but with a Croatia Airlines marketing code share agreement.
  • Read more 01DEC2013: No takers for 49% stake in Croatia Airlines
Croatia Airlines (OU, Zagreb) has not received a single bid for a 49% stake in the carrier, Croatian transport minister Sinisa Hajdas Doncic has told local media. The news comes amid reports that Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) among others had shown strong interest in the Croat carrier which this year, is excepted to turn its first profit in six years. However, Mr Doncic said he was not worried given that a second tender was scheduled to be put forward next year. "Early next year, when we announce the second round for initial offers after publishing the airline’s 2013 financial results, there will be interest in Croatia Airlines," he is quoted by Ex-YU Aviation News. For the time being, the Croat national carrier will continue on with its restructuring program, scheduled to last until 2015. CEO, Krešimir Kučko, has resolutely said that the carrier has a clear development plan "regardless of whether it is able to find a new part owner or not."
  • Read more 13NOV2013: New Croat startup, Libertas Air, eyes Dubrovnik market
Libertas Air (Dubrovnik) is a new Croat start-up carrier aiming to launch domestic flights from April next year using a pair of leased A320-200s. The airline's founder, Zoran Prpić, is a former pilot and owner of tour operator, Carpe Diem. EX-YU Aviation News says the airline will require EUR3million (USD3.9million) in initial start-up capital. Configured in an all-economy lay out, the A320s will be used to take up underserved/suspended Croatia Airlines (OU, Zagreb) routes, with particular reference to Dubrovnik where Croatia Airlines has cut several routes. Presently, Croatia Airlines operates a near monopoly on domestic Croatian flights, which are reportedly "heavily subsidized." However, that has now changed after the Ministry of Maritime Affairs awarded charter carrier Trade Air (C3, Zagreb) traffic rights for Zagreb to Osijek and Rijeka - Split - Dubrovnik - Rijeka.
