  • Read more 07OCT2013: Aeroflot confirms its plans to resume serving the Georgian market
Aeroflot (SU, Moscow Sheremetyevo) is planning to start operating to Georgia again five years after the short war between Georgia and Russia. It is currently waiting for negotiations between the two countries to conclude regarding the traffic rights allowing the Russian national carrier to restore connectivity between Moscow Sheremetyevo and Tbilisi. According to the ch-aviation schedule database, Aeroflot plans to begin flights from Moscow to Tbilisi from next March on a daily basis using A320-200s. Both S7 Airlines (S7, Novosibirsk) and Georgian Airways (A9, Tbilisi) already operate services between Moscow Domodedovo and Moscow Vnukovo and the Georgian airports of Batumi, Kutaisi and Tblisi. In the meantime Air Caucasus (UY, Tbilisi) also has plans to launch flights to Moscow but so far the company has not received any response from Moscow regarding traffic rights according to its CEO George Kodua. Air Caucasus already offers scheduled charter flights to Kiev Borispol, Donetsk and Aktau.

Air Caucasus (UY, Tbilisi) Director General, George Kodua, says lingering political tensions between Georgia and Russia are obstructing his airline's plans to start flights to Moscow. According to Central Asia Aero News, Air Caucasus says that in response to a recent application to Moscow to start charter flights there, the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsiya, demanded to see additional confirmations from the Georgian Civil Aviation Administration (GCAA), a request the GCAA said it could not fulfil owing to a lack of diplomatic relations between the two countries. “We wrote to Moscow prior to receive [sic] an official letter from the Georgian side, stating we have already received permission from the Georgian side, but they require additional documentation and hinted that the case should be seen in a political light”, Mr. Kodua stated. In 2008, Georgia fought a five-day long war against Russia (along with the separatist Republic of South Ossetia and the Republic of Abkhazia), following which diplomatic ties between the two ex-Soviet states were broken off.
