  • Read more 28JAN2014: Spanish start-up, Mundicanarias, eyes Canary Islands market
Mundicanarias (Madrid Barajas) is a new Spanish carrier looking to launch operations out of Madrid Barajas this Spring. Backed by Luis Mata and several former-Globalia executives, Spanish newspaper, El Confidencial, says the airline will offer year-round scheduled services from the Spanish capital to both Tenerife and Las Palmas using an initial fleet of two A320-200s or B737s. The ch-aviation route database shows services on the routes in question are currently dominated by Air Europa (UX, Palma de Mallorca Son Sant Joan), Iberia (IB, Madrid Barajas) and Ryanair (FR, Dublin Int'l).
  • Read more 27JAN2014: Pressure on Caracas mounts as Aerolineas Argentinas suspends sales
Aerolineas Argentinas (AR, Buenos Aires Ezeiza) has joined the likes of American Airlines (AA, Dallas/Fort Worth), Air Canada (AC, Montréal Trudeau), United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare), Copa Airlines (CM, Panamá City Tocumen Int'l), Air Europa (UX, Palma de Mallorca Son Sant Joan) and Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) in suspending the sale of tickets in Venezuela over unpaid ticket-sales revenue. Pressure on Caracas has mounted in recent days after the country's Vice President of Economic Affairs, Rafael Ramirez, announced that airlines would be forced to use a secondary exchange rate determined by weekly auctions. The rate set at the latest auction was 11.36 bolivars per dollar, compared with the official rate of 6.3. The move would effectively wipe out half the estimated USD3billion in remittances owed foreign carriers leading some, such as TAME Ecuador (EQ, Quito Int'l), to suspend their flights to Caracas Simón Bolivar in protest.
  • Read more 26JAN2014: Air Europa awarded Almeria PSO contracts to Seville, Madrid
Air Europa (UX, Palma de Mallorca Son Sant Joan) has won a tender to operate Public Service Obligation (PSO) routes from Almería to Seville and Madrid Barajas. Seville flights recently launched while Madrid services are expected to launch on February 17, 2014. • Read more 22JAN2014: Venezuela offers foreign airlines fuel, bonds, and "some" cash
Alitalia (AZ, Rome Fiumicino) and the Venezuela government have reached an agreement in which the Venezuelans will pay off half their debt to the Italians in the form of fuel with the rest in state bonds (25%) and foreign currency (25%). The announcement follows days of talks between Alitalia and government which included the local civil aviation authority (Instituto Nacional de Aeronáutica Civil - INAC) and the state petroleum outfit, Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA). The deal is understood to have been tabled to all carriers affected by Venezuela's self inflicted foreign currency crunch. INAC's president, Pedro González Díaz, is quoted by El Universal as saying the government is to honor the debts through a mechanism that includes payment in foreign currency, debt bonds, and fuel though this is based on the amount payable up until December 31, 2013. Payments related to operations in 2014 are to start from scratch, said Mr González. So critical has the situation become that Air Europa (UX, Palma de Mallorca Son Sant Joan) Deputy Managing Director, José María Hoyos, was forced to fly out to Caracas to underscore the need for his airline's earnings to be repatriated in US Dollars. Bloomberg newswire says that with foreign carriers owed a total of USD3.3billion, the socialist government of Nicholas Maduro was on Wednesday, January 22, forced to reimburse airlines for ticket sales at the exchange rate used at weekly auctions, which last sold dollars at VEF11.36, compared with the official rate of VEF6.3.
