    VivaColombia (5Z, Medellín José Maria Córdova) is considering establishing a base at San Salvador Int'l, El Salvador as an initial foothold into the lucrative, yet underserved, Central American market.

    Speaking at the recent Routes Americas conference, VivaColombia Vice President Commercial, William Shaw, said his airline was talking to many countries in the region and saw great potential for a Low Cost Carrier in the region.

    "We're seeing the possibilities of a route to El Salvador or of having a base in El Salvador," Shaw told Dinero. Shaw added that El Salvador's attractiveness stemmed from its enormous tourism potential as well as its huge diaspora community abroad.

    El Salvadoran Tourism Minister Jose Napoleon Duarte, confirmed negotiations with the Colombian airline are at an advanced stage.

    Local LCC start-up, Veca Airlines (San Salvador Int'l), is in the process of finalizing its permits with a planned launch date set for April.

    TAG - Transportes Aéreos Guatemaltecos (5U, Guatemala City) will begin operations to San Salvador's old airport on March 20 with a daily flight from Guatemala City to San Salvador Ilopango in El Salvador, the head of the El Salvadoran Civil Aviation Authority (Autoridad de Aviación Civil - AAC) Alirio Serrano has confirmed at Routes Americas.

    He told the El Salvador newspaper that flights to Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Belize would also be added at some stage in the future.

    Operations are on-board one of the airlines three Saab 340As.

    Serrano also confirmed that local start-up Veca Airlines (San Salvador Int'l), which is funded by Alba, has obtained its Air Operators Certificate and is now sorting out the last few permits required ahead of a possible April launch.

    "We hope that with these airlines, and others that may subsequently come to the country, the industry here will grow," Serrano concluded.

    Veca Airlines (San Salvador Int'l) is set to acquire its first aircraft ahead of a planned launch in early 2014. So far, according to Aerotransport, the El Salvadorean start-up has secured the first of two A319-100s, N1235V (cn 2718), formerly with Cyprus Airways (CY, Larnaca). According to local newspaper, ContraPunto, the twinjets are on lease from the International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) with the second due next year.

    Veca Airlines (San Salvador Int'l) is a planned new El Salvadorean LCC backed up by the country's local petroleum outfit, Alba Petróleos de El Salvador, to the tune of USD14million. While no exact business plans have been divulged, it is understood that the carrier will focus on providing budget air services throughout Central America using leased aircraft. VECA is understood to have so far conformed to 60% of the requirements laid down by El Salvador's aviation regulator, Autoridad de Aviación Civil (ACC), with a 2014-launch on the cards.
