The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has issued a suite of Strategic Road Maps which will see AZAL Azerbaijan Airlines' ageing aircraft fleet updated, airport infrastructure upgraded, and direct flights to Europe doubled. Although a subsidiary of its parent, Buta Airways will have its own fleet of Embraer (São José dos Campos) aircraft as well as its own livery, staff, and tariff policy. Given this announcement, it is uncertain what role AZALJET (Baku), AZAL's budget brand, will play in AZAL's operations going forward.
Buta Airways is expected to launch in autumn 2017.
Under the terms of the deal, signed late last month, the Djibouti national carrier will provide regional African cargo feed into an AZAL Djibouti-Baku return service. The two have also pledged to establish a joint cargo transportation company.
