Austrian Airlines (OS, Vienna) and parent Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt International) have indefinitely suspended flights to Tripoli International owing to the precarious security situation in the Libyan capital. In the wake of a series of bombings of Tripoli's main runway in late March, the two carriers, in conjunction with Alitalia (AZA, Rome Fiumicino) and British Airways (BA, London Heathrow), suspended their respective flights.

Alitalia and British Airways have extended a moratorium on flights to the troubled North African country until April 15 at the earliest.

Unrest has continued to grip the country despite the overthrow of strongman Muammur Gaddhafi in 2011.

On Monday, April 8, protesters blocked roads to Tripoli airport for several hours calling for the resignation of the President of the Libyan General National Congress, Nouri Abu Sahmain, and his government whom they accuse of incompetence and mismanagement.
