Norwegian (Oslo Gardermoen) has unveiled plans to begin intercontinental services out of its newly established Madrid Barajas once its B787 long-haul fleet is fully in place. Spanish newspaper Reportur says once operational and fully fleeted, Norwegian Air International (Dublin International) would open up routes to New York JFK, Los Angeles International, and San Francisco in the United States with South American flights to consist of Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini, Santiago de Chile, Natal Aluizio Alves, and Rio de Janeiro International.

In terms of Africa, Tanzania and South Africa have been mentioned while potential Asian destinations could include China, Japan, Thailand and Singapore.

Effective June 3, Norwegian based two B737-800s out of Madrid for use in launching new flights to Oslo Gardermoen, Stockholm Arlanda, Helsinki Vantaa, Hamburg Helmut Schmidt, Warsaw Chopin, and London Gatwick.

Bureaucratic procedures aside, Emirates (EK, Dubai International) is also expressed an interest in developing Spain into its own international hub for onward flights to Latin America. As reported previously, Emirates country general manager, Fernando Suárez de Góngora, has gone on record as saying such a proposal would "make sense" and has "strong potential."
