Boeing (BOE, Washington National) has reportedly offered Air India (AI, Delhi International) USD24million in compensation for losses the airline incurred as a result of incessant problems with its fleet of B787-8s. India's Hindustan Times says the amount offered is approximately half what the airline had originally pitched for - USD48million.

“Boeing has agreed to a compensation of USD24million, which is approximately half of the compensation asked by Air India,” the minutes of a meeting of Air India's turnaround oversight committee said.

The carrier has since requested the country's Ministry of Civil Aviation to nominate an official to negotiate with Boeing.

Airline officials who spoke to the newspaper say they arrived at the figure based on actual costs incurred as a result of having to service the aircraft loan during grounding, retraining of pilots, and commercial losses incurred as a result of damage to the airline's image.

Air India's qualms also pertain to the weight of the B787s which it says, is above that originally stated by the manufacturer and which has subsequently impacted negatively on the aircraft's fuel efficiency.

Air India successfully sought and received compensation from Boeing for the late delivery of the aircraft in 2012.
