Aeroméxico (AM, México City International) will pursue closer ties with Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) should ongoing talks between the United States and Mexico lead to a viable Open Skies agreement. Speaking to FlightGlobal, CEO Andres Conesa said that once a treaty has been signed between the two countries, AeroMéxico will pursue antitrust immunity for its planned partnership with Delta.

Closer cooperation with the US carrier, which together with Delta Master Trust owns a 9.1% stake in AeroMexico, will improve the Mexican carrier's overall competitiveness, Conesa added.

Over the years, AeroMéxico and Delta have collaborated extensively culminating in the signing of a commercial alliance in 2012. Since then, the two have opened Latin America's largest heavy Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) facility at Querétaro in addition to investing equal amounts in a project to move work to Guadalajara and expand MRO capabilities for their own aircraft and other carriers.

Delta has also advised the Mexican carrier on the development of its México City International hub operations with the overall aim of developing it into a core hub for travel between the Americas as well as to Asia.
