Thai Airways International (TG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) will indeed end A340-600 and B747-400(F) operations later this month sources in the Thai capital inform ch-aviation.

The carrier's five-strong fleet of A340-600s is scheduled to be decommissioned on March 29 along with four A330-300s and two B747-400(F)s. The shortfall will be met with the arrival this summer of two B787-8s and two B777-300(ER)s.

As part of a two-year long restructuring programme aimed at turning the loss-making carrier into a profitable entity, airline management has earmarked the sale of 22 jets - including its parked A340-500s, A300-600s, B777-200(ER)s, and B737-400s - by July of this year to help improve Thai's overall financial standing.

Should the first round of sales fail to make a positive impact on the airline's books then, according to Thai Airways International's president Charamporn Jotikasthira, a second round of sell-offs involving another 20 or so aircraft would be considered.
