Binter Canarias (NT, Gran Canaria) has established a new Cape Verdian subsidiary - Binter CV (Praia) - as of Wednesday, June 17. The start-up is currently in the process of securing its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Cape Verde's civil aviation authority (Agência de Aviação Civil - AAC).

Local media reports suggest Binter Cabo Verde will employ 60 locals and will initially be equipped with its parent's CRJ900 though it will be replaced with two new ATR72-600s towards the end of the year.

In terms of operations, the Spanish carrier intends to use its new subsidiary to boost its penetration into the African market targeting nations such as Ghana and Mali.

Aside from services to Praia and Sal Amilcar Cabral International in the Cape Verde Islands, situated 500km west of Senegal, Binter's only destinations on the African mainland include Agadir, Casablanca Mohamed V, and Marrakech in Morocco, Laayoune in the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, Banjul in Gambia, Dakar Yoff-Léopold Sédar Senghor International in Senegal, and Nouakchott in Mauritania.

At the same time, Binter is also looking to develop its Gran Canaria hub into a preferred destination for African medical and leisure tourists offering the same quality of care/hospitality as further afield centres such as Lisbon and Madrid.
